Purpose
This study compared augmented-reality-assisted intraoral scanning (ARIOS) with conventional intraoral scanning (IOS) in terms of scanning time, image count, data precision, user experience, and the effect of andragogical training on operator proficiency.
Methods
Twenty-five dental students performed three ARIOS and three IOS scans each in a within-subject experimental design. Scanning time, number of captured images, and participant surveys (entry, exit, NASA-TLX) were collected. Precision was assessed using RMS error.
Results
Participants showed a 7:3 preference for ARIOS. Compared to IOS, ARIOS demonstrated:
- 8.5% faster mandibular scanning
- 10.5% faster maxillary scanning
- 8.6–9.3% fewer images required
Precision (RMS) was comparable between the two systems.
Conclusion
Andragogical training improved ARIOS proficiency. Overall, ARIOS offered better scanning efficiency, ergonomics, ease of use, and lower workload than IOS.
